WHL teams claim three locals

Western Hockey League teams chose three local players in last Thursday’s Bantam Draft.

Dante Hannoun of the North Shore Winter Club was taken 11th overall by the Victoria Royals.

The North Delta resident is a five-foot-five, 140-pound centre.

He tied for the scoring lead at the Western Canadian Bantam Championships in Kindersly, Saskatchewan, scoring six goals and adding six assists in five games to lead North Shore to a second-place finish.

Matt Barberis of Surrey went 20th overall to the Edmonton oil Kings. Barberis, a five-foot-10, 172-pound defenceman, played for the Burnaby Winter Club this past season.

Surrey native Shavan Khaira, a defenceman with the Okanagan Hockey Academy, was claimed in the ninth round by the Seattle Thunderbirds.
