After opening the season with wins, the CBC Bearcats men’s and women’s basketball teams lost some grip on their winning ways.
The teams came up winless in travels to Squamish and Vancouver over the weekend, losing all four games to the Quest Kermodes and Langara Falcons.
The women lost 82-53 to Quest on Friday, in a game that Quest led mostly from start to finish. The Bearcats trailed 39-23 at the half, but had a good third quarter matching the Kermodes 18-18. Quest then took over in the fourth, outscoring CBC 25-12.
Guard Grace Tadrous had a team high 12 points, and Sarah Rozendal added 11 points and six rebounds. Forward Tolu Ojo grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds. The Bearcats shot only 20 per cent in the first half and committed a total of 37 turnovers.
The women fared better against Langara on Saturday, but fell 63-57. Mandy Van Delden led the way with 17 points and five rebounds, with Rozendal scoring 15 points and grabbing six rebounds. Deanna Esau added 11 points for CBC.
The men opened and closed well against Quest on Friday, but couldn’t overcome a third quarter in which they were outscored 24-16 in the third quarter to lose 81-78.
CBC had a balanced attack, with four players scoring in double digits. Konrad Jamie had a team-high 18 points and guard Kevin Davis had 12 points, 13 assists and nine rebounds. Also reaching double digits were Umbori Watson (16) and Elijah Calhoun (14).
The Bearcats shot an impressive 45 per cent from the field, but were out-rebounded 47-38 by Quest.
The third quarter again killed the Bearcats against the Langara Falcons on Saturday. CBC saw a 38-35 lead vanish after the Falcons outscored them 31-15 in the third, and CBC couldn’t close the gap.
Davis had 15 points, eight rebounds and five assists, and Calhoun contributed with 14 points and nine rebounds. Umbori Watson (13 points) and Si Woo Yun (14 points) also had solid games for CBC.
The Bearcats next make their home debut on Friday against Camosun College. The women tip-off at 6 p.m., and the men get underway at 8 p.m. They also host the VIU Mariners on Sunday, with start times of 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
