On Saturday, February 17, the Witset Canyon Bears have invited the Burns Lake Chiefs to Smithers for a re-match exhibition hockey game.

Recently, the Burns Lake Chiefs organized ice time for an exhibition game with the Witset Canyon Bears. A long-time recreational sporting rivalry exists between these villages. At this game, more than 200 spectators filled the stands. The event was also promoted as a fundraiser, which was highly successful — the 50/50 alone raised over $1,000.

Jeremy Dumont described the first match as intense.

“Our team was down 6-2; we tied the game at six seconds and went on to win it in overtime,” he said.

The Witset Canyon Bears wanted to set up a re-match, but the logistics proved challenging, with no ice time available anywhere in the Smithers area. Jeremy’s recreational team heard this and immediately gave up their hour for the cause.

This will be a great opportunity to watch some high-calibre hockey between two excellent First Nations teams, as well as to support local children in sports.

Puck drop is at 7:30 p.m.
