The regional high school rodeo competition kicks off this Friday morning, April 6 in the Stampede Grounds with the Wrangler division younger rodeo contestants ages seven to nine.
These young people compete in events such as dummy roping, shoot dogging, steer wrestling, break away roping, calf tail tying, goat tying, and more entertaining rodeo events.
Friday evening kicks off the first of a series of rodeo competitions for the High School Rodeo Queen contestants. They will be judged on horsemanship, public speaking, modeling, poise and personality.
The contestants compete at several high school rodeos in their region and at the finals in June where the new queen will be crowned. The B.C. high school rodeo queen goes on to represent B.C. at the Canadian High School Rodeo competition in Manitoba.
Saturday the Wrangler events for younger competitors again take place in the morning.
The events for high school students start in the afternoon with showcase ribbon roping, bull riding, steer wrestling, team roping, break away roping, tie down roping, bronc riding, bare back riding, pole bending, barrel racing, goat tying and more.
Sunday the high school events run through the morning and early afternoon.
Admission is free. Bring your family to enjoy our local rodeo youth in action. The infield concession will be open during the weekend.
High school students from B.C. are competing in regional rodeo events between September and June concurrent with the school year.
In June the BCHSRA finals are held where students compete to earn prizes and scholarships.
The association is pleased and excited to announce that Williams Lake will be the home and host for the 2011 high school rodeo provincial championships June 10-12.
The top 12 high school rodeo athletes in each event from the North Region (north of Quesnel) will compete with the top 12 athletes from the South Region (Quesnel and south) for the title of B.C. Champion and the opportunity to earn scholarships and prizes.
The top four finishers will also earn a position on the BC Team competing at the National High School Rodeo Finals in Gillette, Wyoming in July.
The top five in each event win a position on the B.C. Team competing at the Canadian High School Rodeo Finals in Virden, Man. in August.
High school rodeo members practice and compete in their events, while learning from each other and creating friendships that will last a lifetime.
