The Thompson Rivers University WolfPack capped a Canada West women’s basketball weekend sweep of the Trinity Western Spartans with a 72-60 win Friday night at the Tournament Capital Centre.
The Spartans led by three (16-13) after the first quarter, but the WolfPack outscored Trinity Western 20-16 in the second quarter to take a one-point lead (33-32) at the half.
TRU outscored Trinity Western 39-28 in the second half and had three players in double figures, led by Vernon’s Diane Schuetze (5th year, post), who had 23 points and 13 rebounds (nine on defence).
Jen Ju (5th year, guard, Vancouver) had 20 points and Taiysa Worsfold (2nd year, guard, Kamloops) had 16.
“I am glad we shot a little bit better in the second half,” said Pack head coach Scott Reeves. “We still missed a lot of one-footers and lay ups though. You can’t do that going into the playoffs.”
Trinity Western also had three players in double figures: Holly Strom (4th year, forward, Calgary) had 24 points and 12 rebounds. Janelle Traber (4th year, guard, Abbotsford) had 15 points and Emily Knauff (5th year, forward, Maple Ridge) had 13 points.
Reeves says the sweep of Trinity Western was big for the team’s playoff chances.
“These were must-wins if we have any chance of hosting (first-round playoff series). What is going to determine that is what happens on the other side (Prairie Division – Calgary and Regina) and our Fraser Valley weekend.”
The WolfPack visit the University of the Fraser Valley next weekend.
