Wolverines earn fifth place at Alberni tourney

The local senior boys basketball team started the tournament Friday with a 68-34 win over Central Saanich’s Stelly’s Secondary School.

Edward Milne Community School Wolverines took fifth spot in the annual Port Alberni Totem Tournament last weekend.

The local senior boys basketball team started the tournament Friday with a 68-34 win over Central Saanich’s Stelly’s Secondary School.

Centre Alec McKenzie powered the Wolverines’ offence, bucketing a season-high 32 points, while playing in only three quarters.

The Wolverines fortunes changed Saturday in a game against Surrey Guildford Park Secondary where the locals were pummeled 102-58.

Guildford was the eventual tournament champion.

“They (Guildford) have talent at every spot,” said Wolverines’ coach Alex Wright.

“Their starting five are extremely, good and everybody else on their bench would start for our team.”

The loss put the Wolverines in the consolation round facing Ballenas Secondary School of Parksville.

The Wolverines started the game without three starters: McKenzie (ankle), Ryan Fuhr (possible concussion) and Nacho Antonutti (calf cramp).

“They played us really strong. It was a big loss for us but we were without three of our best players,” Wright said.

The Wolverines returned to regular season play last night against Pacific Christian Secondary School. The game result was not available at press time.

The squad also has key games against divisional rivals Mount Doug (Feb. 2) and Victoria High (Jan. 31) in the coming weeks which could have playoff ramifications.

“We’re going in the right direction, and we’ll soon see how things turn out,” Wright said.
