Women go to bat for own fastball league

The local softball community may be on the verge of expansion.

Recently, within the South Cariboo Minor Softball Association, the idea of creating a women’s fastball league

was pitched and a meeting held Jan. 20 drew 10 women interested in supporting it.

Association president Jodi Thomson says she is certain that between 25 and 30 women are interested in playing in a fastball league and this would result in three teams.

“We haven’t had a women’s league for 10 or 12 years. This is wonderful.”

In addition, the association female midget and female bantam teams could join the league, as could an existing team at Canim Lake.

“That’s how it used to be when I played ball years ago.”

Enthusiasm is so high some women have already expressed interest in playing at tournaments.

To get the ball rolling, Thomson is booking indoor practice times for the end of March, during which players

can limber up their throwing and batting arms. By the beginning of May, they should be out on the field.

She is inviting any women who have an interest in playing to contact her.

“We have a big variety of backgrounds. Some women have played before, and now after raising children, they’re ready to come back. There are some people who have played slo-pitch and some newbies, too. “

The only obstacle she sees is the insufficient number of playing fields in 100 Mile House.

“We’ll have to

start applying for grants to get more fields built. We have over 200 children involved in ball and there’s not really room for a new league, so we’ll have to juggle.”
