Women’s fastball alive and strong

After 15 years, ladies league has returned to 100 Mile House

After a 15-year absence, the Women’s Fastball League (WFL) has returned to 100 Mile House.

The ladies play ball every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 6:30 p.m. at the Dick Robertson ball field, which is next to the South Cariboo Rec. Centre.

We wanted to start it up again, so we invited as many people as we could,” says WFL vice-president Lorna Ross.

The league is composed of three teams – Borgos Sport Shack, Canim Lake Wind Walkers and One in Five. There were only two teams competing before the league disbanded 15 years ago.

The current teams are composed of new, slo-pitch and seasoned players.

We have quite a few who played back in the day when it was still going,” says Ross.

The first few weeks were slow with people getting back into it. But overall the reception has been good.”

Before the season began in May, Ross created a Facebook page to help put the word out about the league. The group, 100 Mile House Women’s Fastball League, currently has 125 members and is still growing.

We already have people who have said they are going to sign up for next year. We are hoping we can have four or five teams next year.”

Ross says she hopes to also include the 100 Mile ‘N Hour U12 fastball team into the mix like the U16 100 Mile ‘N Hour fastball team is playing in the 100 Mile House Men’s Fastball League.

During an exhibition match between One in Five and Borgos Sport Shack on June 29, the women encouraged each other, Ross says, adding they even encouraged opposing players.

Everyone is having a good time.”

Borgos won 18-13, with Natalie Cox hitting a grand slam for Borgos.

The Women’s Fastball League will run until the end of July.
