The South Cariboo Rec. Centre was booming with workout beats as children and adults carried out several workouts at the first ever Summer Solstice fitness event on June 22.
There was a last-minute change of venue as the event had to switch from Centennial Park to the Rec. Centre after the weather looked to be non-cooperative.
In the end, the Rec. Centre provided a cooler and more acoustically sound area for working out. Three different workouts were offered starting with Family Zumba by Gale Ogden.
A $10 donation was suggested for each class and the money went to the South Cariboo Early Childhood Development Table (SCECDT).
Many moms took part in the kinetic exercise, while children tried to follow the quick movements. Ogden went the extra level and moved in and out of the group, adding an extra dynamic to the exercise.
The biggest event of the evening was Canlan Ice Sports special event and community program leader Deanna Deacon led the Booty Camp exercise.
“We were happy people found us despite the change of venue,” says Deacon. “There was such great enthusiasm from everyone.”
Things settled down for the Solstice Yoga session by Kate Todd and Sonja Ramsay. Remaining participants got a great stretch along with a soothing exercise to end the night.
Despite being an inaugural event and the sudden change of venue, $430 was raised for the SCECDT.
“It was great seeing the community coming together to workout,” says Deacon. “It was an added bonus seeing multiple fitness instructors work together as well.”
Deacon says she is looking forward to the Summer Solstice fitness event returning next year.
“It’s going to be much bigger next year and, hopefully, we will have the weather on our side so we can do it in the park.”
