Salmon Arm boxer Mickey Sims now holds the Senior Masters Middleweight World Champion title.

He won his finals fight against Robert Meyer of Philadelphia at the four-day Masters Ringside World Champion Boxing Tournament in Kansas City last Saturday night.

Sims fought against Benjamin Matthews of Chicago in the second of his three sessions in the Middleweight Division.

“He was taller and younger than me,” said Sims.

“My coach wanted me to go out strong and hit him (Matthews) hard to intimidate him in the first round, then move and box, and so I stayed to his fight plan. This was the hardest fight I had, but I won all three rounds, and that fight put me in the finals.”

Of his fight against Meyer in the finals, Sims said, “I dominated the final in all three rounds – I think I only got hit three times the whole fight. My coach for this fight was from Sydney, Australia. He was great, and had me moving and counter punching. It was an awesome feeling.”

Sims would like to thank the Salmon Arm community for their support, “and especially my wife and family who sacrificed a lot while I was training, and my coach and nutritionist, Peggy Maerz, who motivated me through all of this.”

It was an experience of a lifetime says Sims, “and it also wouldn’t have been possible without the help of my morning guys,” all the local business people who train with Sims and who contributed financially to his trip.
