California’s Mike Maggio shattered the world record for the fastest recorded speed with a door car Sunday in the final round of the West Coast Outlaw Pro Mods at Mission Raceway Park.
Maggio blasted through the quarter-mile strip at 261.09 mph, with an elapsed time of 5.90 in his Outlaw Camaro.
He won the Pro Mod part of the event in convincing fashion, and ran the quickest time in Western Canada in the process, 5.82 in the second qualifying run Saturday evening.
Maggio was the fastest all weekend long and left with one of the most coveted milestones in the sport of Drag Racing. You can be sure that he will be back along with a number of other racers from the Southern United States. Luckily the event had five cars from the northwest attend as only three from south of the border made the trek up.
Joe Delehay made the quickest run of any Canadian driver at the event, turning in a 6.18/230 mph in round one of eliminations.
There were two wild crashes on the weekend as well, one including local driver Trevor Lowe in the brand new RH/Lowe Down ‘70 Camaro. Lowe was not hurt in the crash, but the car suffered substantial damage.
Dan Nicholson from California was the other driver who crashed his Pro Mod, a very nice Viper. He hit the wall Sunday during round one of eliminations. His car suffered similar damage as Lowe’s.
In other racing action, Dale Pedersen from Dawson Creek, B.C. defeated Kelowna’s Kerry Stone in Pro Street. Both cars were running 6.40s at over 220 mph.
It should have been a great final round, but Kerry had staging issues and could not get to the starting line before the lights went green. Pitt Meadows driver Rob Charlton won in the Doorslammer association event. He defeated Mission’s Kirk Lanz when Lanz was late off the starting line.
Washington’s Mike Peck won the other feature class on the weekend called Pro Nostalgia. He ran a 6.79 in his blown front engine dragster.
Next weekend (July 20-22), the Canadian National Open series hits town. It is the biggest event in the northwest with over 32 Funny Car expected to compete. Nitro Harleys and Pro Street are also feature classes. If you missed the race this past weekend make sure you don’t miss this one. Nitro Funny Cars from as far away as Arizona will compete, Nitro Harleys from all over North America and 20 of the best Nostalgia Funny Car from B.C., Alberta, Washington and Oregon will be on hand.
All the feature classes run Saturday afternoon and evening with final qualifying scheduled for 9 p.m. Saturday night. Final rounds start at noon on Sunday. For tickets and racing information, visit www.missionraceway.com.
