Wrestling their way to strong finishes

Salmon Arm Secondary’s wrestling team put in a great showing on the mat at the Western Age Class Wrestling Tournament

Salmon Arm Secondary’s wrestling team put in a great showing on the mat at the Western Age Class Wrestling Tournament held in Kamloops Jan. 13 and 14.

Of the 30 wrestlers who attended from SAS, 15 wrestled in the Cadet category while the other half competed in Juvenile.

Courtney Larson claimed 1st place in the female 82kg Juvenile category, the top finish for the SAS team, with teammates Liz Szoke placing 2nd in the female 56kg category, Tyler Stammers was 4th in the male 76kg and Matrix Gathergood 5th in the male 92kg category.

On the Cadet side of the competition, Shay-Lyn Steiger finished 2nd in the female 40kg category and Kennedy Gerlitz took 4th in the female 40kg.

On the male side, Braden Chamberlain was 4th in the 46kg, Cody Gulka was 5th in the 69kg, Micah Gunn was 6th in the 58kg and Cody Janzen was  6th in the 63kg.

Five of the SAS teammates were forced out of the competition due to injuries.

All athletes are now preparing for the Zone Championships and BC Championships taking place next month.
