X-Women, Axewomen to finish one and two in conference

The University of Acadia Axewomen’s rugby team improved to 3-2 on its campaign.

The University of Acadia Axewomen’s rugby team, with Williams Lake’s Laura Pfleiderer, Emma Pfleiderer, Natasha Johnson and Skye Forcier, improved to 3-2 on its campaign with a convincing 45-7 win over the visiting UPEI Panthers last weekend.

The win solidifies a second-place finish for the Axewomen, who are based out of Wolfville, N.S., as they wrap up the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) season at Saint Mary’s this weekend.

Three of the four lakecity players — Laura, Emma and Johnson — all scored tries, while Forcier was unable to play due to injury.

Laura scored at the 20-minute mark to help put Acadia up 12-0 early and was named the Subway Player of the Game.

Johnson, meanwhile, recorded her seventh try of the season at the end of the first half to give Acadia a 19-0 halftime lead. Johnson leads the Axewomen with seven tries and is second in the conference.

Emma later added a converted try to push Acadia to a 40-0 blowout lead.

Carleigh Walters, also of Williams Lake, and her St. Francis Xavier X-Women teammates, are a perfect 5-0 on the CIS campaign and will be back in action on Saturday, Oct. 15 when they face the UPEI Panthers in their regular season finale.

Walters, Emma, Laura, Forcier and Johnson — all first-year varsity players and Lake City secondary graduates — made the decision to travel east to Nova Scotia to attend university to play rugby.
