The Langley Xtreme stole the provincial championship.
The U12 rep B girls softball team was a worthy recipient, but the winning run came courtesy of some aggressive base-running. With the score tied at four runs apiece in the fourth inning, the Xtreme base-runner took off for third base on a stolen base attempt.
And when the attempted throw from the back-catcher got away from the third baseman, the winning run came home.
Langley added two more runs in the inning to defeat the Richmond Islanders 05 team 7-4 and claim the provincial title.
It wrapped a perfect showing for the Xtreme at the provincial championships, which ran July 14 to 16 at Albion Park in Maple Ridge, as well as an outstanding season which saw them go an eye-popping 65-2 and win five tournaments.
In Langley’s other games at provincials, they went 4-0 in round robin play, winning 8-0 over the Coquitlam Classics 05, beating the Duncan Rivercats 11-1, and then posting back-to-back shutouts over the Ridge Meadows Rage 06 and Central Vancouver Island Rage by identical 10-0 scores.
The playoff round began with another 10-0 win, this time over the Prince George Thunderbirds and then a 10-2 win over the Ridge Meadows Rage 02.
And in the semifinals, Langley edged the Islanders 6-5.
