Hazelton athlete Regan Yee raced to the top of the podium capturing gold again last weekend in the 2000 meter steeplechase and currently holds the second fastest time in the 16 to 19 year olds in Canada.
Her recent first place finish was at the BC Athletics Championships Jamboree in Coquitlam which is the track meet that BC Athletics select their team to compete in the National Championships. Her time of 6:49.77 from last Friday’s event was well below the qualifying standard that BC Athletics has set for their BC Team selection which means Yee will now be traveling to Ottawa in August as B.C.’s representative at the National Track and Field Championships.
Her coach, Neal Currie, said she not only “knocked the socks off everyone” at the recent meet but she also surprised him.
“She opened up with a 72-73 second first lap, I was expecting about 80 seconds, then some 83 seconds after that,” he said. “That put a few metres into the competition right away, and then she stretched it out to about 10 meters on the second lap, 18 on the third lap, and about 30 meters on the fourth lap. The final gap was about 35 meters, but Regan still had a strong kick at the end just in case anyone was there with her. I was actually worried she had gone out too hard and told her to back off, but she must have felt great because she kept pushing through.”
In addition to her top finish in the 2000 meter, Yee also placed second in the 3000 meter.
