Okanagan Zone men’s soccer teams are playing for gold today at the B.C. Seniors (55+) Games in the Kootenays.

The 55s were scheduled to meet Vancouver Island North in round-robin play Thursday in Casltegar. Both teams went into the game having already clinched gold-medal match berths.

Wolfgang Bopp of Salmon Arm scored twice as the 55s opened the Games Wednesday morning with a 6-0 victory over the Kootenays.

Vernon’s Jenne Huberts and Mahmoud Abdel-Kader, along with Kelowna’s Joe Jamison and Ken Wither, also scored in support of Allen Bensmiller.

The 55s then shut down defending champion Vancouver Island South 3-0 on goals by Jamison (2) and Bopp, who helped set up Jamison’s markers. Bensmiller was busy in recording the shutout.

Representatives from the North Okanagan also include Tim Penaluna, Denis Chabot, Harry Adam, Rich Zecchel, Erv Schuur and Mike Siemens.

The 60s Okanagan team won both of its preliminary games – 1-0 over Kamloops and 3-0 over Vancouver Island South. They play in a gold-medal game against the zone they faced in round-robin action Thursday.

Vernon’s Boris Pasieka and Felix Heinrich play on the 60s team.
