It is hard to keep anything clean this time of year, but a new dog grooming business is helping pet owners keep their dogs squeaky clean all year long.
“I’ve just opened a dog grooming service called Squeaky Clean Grooming, out of the Bed-n-Biscuit Kennel,” said Emilie Larochelle. The business has been open since mid-December.
“I do everything for dogs. I don’t do anything for cats right now, just because of where I’m located. I don’t think it would be fair for people to bring their cats into a dog kennel. But I have been trained to work with cats,” said Larochelle.
Larochelle, originally from Quebec, came to British Columbia quite some time ago.
“I’ve been in Golden for about 10 years, so quite a long time,” she said. “I came here to learn English and I just never left. I think that’s like a lot of people in this town.”
After working at Selkirk Sports for several years, Larochelle decided she wanted something that fit in with her family life.
“It’s been pretty good so far, I’ve had some pretty interesting people coming over with their dogs,” she said.
“In Golden I haven’t had to deal with any really difficult dogs yet, fortunately. But when I was doing my schooling we had to work with some really aggressive dogs. I’ve been pretty good with it so far. I was the only one who didn’t get bitten in the class. So I think I’m maybe quicker or safer than some of the others, I don’t know.”
Larochelle has two dogs, both Akitas, who she has spent many hours grooming. But she also went away to learn the ins and outs of the trade. “I went to school for grooming. I went away for more than four months altogether. So I’ve learned quite a lot. And I really enjoy it. I’ve found out that it’s not an easy job though, not nearly as easy as I had thought,” she said.
