On May 5, local sake producer Masa Shiroki's fourth rice crop is planted in an Abbotsford field.

Local farmer Masa Shiroki was in the fields on Monday, planting crops on Abbotsford’s only rice farm with the help of volunteers.

Shiroki will eventually turn the rice into locally-sourced sake – Japanese rice wine – through his company Artisan Sakemaker.

This will be the fourth year that Shiroki has planted rice on land near Highway 1 and Sumas Way.
