Vita D Sunshine Eggs, the first eggs in the world to contain 100 per cent daily value vitamin D, received national acclaim up against some of the biggest names in grocery at Wednesday night’s Canadian Grand Prix Product of the Year Awards gala dinner.

Awarded best healthy food innovation and best new product in the deli, egg, meat and seafood category, Vita D

Sunshine Eggs are produced by family-owned Abbotsford dairy and egg company, Vitala Foods.

During his acceptance speech, Vitala Foods CEO Bill Vanderkooi said the awards came as a complete surprise

and acknowledged the hard work of his staff, and of course, the sunshine chickens.

“Thank you, it’s an honour. I want to thank my staff who made this possible and of course all those hard working

chickens,” he said.

Vita D Sunshine Eggs are the result of three years of research and development in conjunction with Nutritech

Solutions, Vanderkooi’s feed business unit.

“We wanted to find a way to produce a 100 per cent daily value vitamin D egg without compromising animal health. The

result is a unique natural plant-source vitamin D feed supplement,” Mr Vanderkooi said. “We feed it to our chickens

to help keep them healthy and to produce a healthy egg that is accessible to all Canadians.”

Vita D Sunshine Eggs contain six times more vitamin D than a conventional egg. Research shows vitamin D is critical to maintaining bone health and the prevention of a number of diseases including multiple sclerosis and some cancers. An estimated 3 million Canadians are vitamin D deficient due to the lack of year-round sunshine.
