There’s a new concrete player in town and they’re planning on a big future in the central Vancouver Island area.

ABC Precast and Readymix opened a new plant near Parksville, off Church Road, last February. They held a grand opening last Friday, marking an increase in business and a staff of six, up from four three months ago.

Manager A.J. Hustings says the company — which is based in Nanaimo — chose to expand into the Parksville area for one reason: they expect construction in the region to boom in the near future.

With a central location, he continued, ABC’s trucks and staff will be able to reach Port Alberni, North Nanaimo and South Courtenay easily.

“There’s a lot of negativity about the economy right now,” he said. “But there is still a lot of potential.”

ABC has been making its concrete out of the Parksville plant since February and plans to expand to include its precast products on the site on Valley Road — a former gravel pit. The site was perfect, said Hustings, not only for its location but it was big enough and had all of the services required.

ABC runs four trucks out of the Parksville plant and Hustings said that is expected to grow over time as well. The plant could have as many as 12 employees in a year or so, he added.
