Heaton hosting photo contest
Heaton Place, Armstrong’s newest retirement community, is holding a photography contest to find the best pictures taken in the North Okanagan.
Professionals and amateurs are encouraged to submit their photos in each of the contest’s three categories: people (individuals from all walks of life); nature (animals, plants, landscapes and geological or climatological features); and places and things (cities, buildings and other man-made creations).
Photos will be narrowed down to a group of finalists by Heaton Place staff, and then contest judges will select a winner in each category and a grand prize winner. Category winners will each receive $100 and the overall winner gets $500.
Select photos will also be posted to the Heaton Place Facebook page, and the photo that gets the most ‘Likes’ will be crowned Peoples’ Choice and earn $100.
For photographers wishing to see their photos publicly displayed, Heaton Place staff will award a number of honourable mentions that will be printed and displayed at the retirement community as well as receive a $50 cash prize.
“The North Okanagan is a place of exceptional beauty, so we are really excited to see the photos that get submitted for this contest. We know there is a lot of talent out there and we are ready to be blown away,” said Alex Miller, a Heaton Place spokesperson.
Full contest rules and details can be found at www.armstrongretirement.com.
Deiter departs from Okanagan Spirits
Frank Deiter will likely raise a glass as he bids adieu to Okanagan Spirits.
Deiter, who founded the fruit distillation company in 2004, announced his resignation as president and master distiller to pursue other interests in the craft distilling industry, both as an independent consultant and instructor.
He will also take on a role as the North American representative for Mueller Pot Stills, one of the leading pot still manufacturers in his native Germany.
Deiter also plans to introduce another new venture to the public this fall – The Mobile Juice Factory.
This mobile fruit processing plant will provide a service to orchards and the public by turning their own fruit into juice using a sealed bag-in-a-box concept.
Deiter is planning to host a Juice-fest at the Army, Navy, Airforce Veterans club, Sunday afternoon on Oct. 23.
“This is another initiative designed to encourage local trade and establishing another link in the value chain of agricultural products here in the Okanagan,” said Deiter.
Meanwhile, Okanagan Spirits will continue in the same location with its well established line of liqueurs, brandies and other fruit spirits.
