Business spotlight: New menu, rental toys now available at Canoe Beach

Jim and Joyce Dunlop bought the concession stand at Canoe Beach last fall and have spent months doing renovations. They have an impressive menu, ranging from zombie burgers and truffle fries to tacos in a bag.

Jim and Joyce Dunlop bought the concession stand at Canoe Beach last fall and have spent months doing renovations. They have an impressive menu, ranging from zombie burgers and truffle fries to tacos in a bag.

They also have rentals: six paddle boards, two kayaks, four hydro bikes, and umbrellas. They are open from noon to 5 p.m. daily, but those hours will extend as the summer goes on, and they’re closed on rainy days.

They are from Alberta, and Jim has retired from his 26 years with Rogers Broadcasting in the sales division. They decided they wanted to keep busy with jobs they would love and being part of a community.

“I’ve always cooked – that’s my passion,” says Jim. “We wanted to be on the water and when this came open we jumped on it immediately. It’s all about giving back and living in a small town.”

Search & Rescue

From June 2 to June 10 the Royal Canadian Marine Search & Rescue (RMC SAR) 106 will have a display at Centenoka Park Mall, including their 19′ refurbished Boston Whaler boat, Guardian 1, and safety videos for people to watch.

“We’re using it for voluntary boat inspections this summer. We’re not an enforcement agency, we don’t impose fines,” says Bruce Weicker, president of RCM SAR 106.

There are currently 25 members in the local RCM SAR, and they cover Shuswap and Mara Lakes. They are looking for volunteers in the Blind Bay area and are hoping to have a new rescue boat coming in early July.

They have a rescue boat, Shuswap Rescue 1, which is equipped with all the supplies a typical ambulance would have.

RCM SAR teaches water safety, and they have numerous kiosks around the lakes with life jackets parents can borrow for their children.

Chris Hosokawa of Takezushi restaurant in Centenoka is helping with their fundraising. She donated a huge basket with a sushi kit and steamers so everyone who donates at least $5 can enter the draw.
