On July 18, 288 golfers gathered at Surrey’s Northview Golf & Country Club for the 15th annual Buy-Low Golf Classic in support of Variety – The Children’s Charity.
The shotgun tee-off started promptly at 7:30 a.m.; early birds were treated to a full breakfast and enjoyed plenty of refreshments throughout the day.
Volunteers from Variety circled the two 18-hole courses bringing snacks and beverages, and ice coffee and barbeque stations kept hungry golfers happy. For the participants – representatives of Buy-Low and their corporate partners – the day could not have been better.
“Everyone had a great time,” says Albert Lum, Director of Merchandising at Buy-Low. “The Buy-Low Variety Golf Classic is one of the best golf tournaments in the food industry. I’m very proud of everyone on my team. They’re passionate about creating a first class event because they care deeply about BC’s kids with special needs. We all want to do what we can to help make their lives better.”
While only some of the golfers had the big swing that kept them on the leaderboard, they all had huge hearts that resulted in an exceptional windfall for Variety. When the final tally came in, Buy-Low’s President Dan Bregg was thrilled to present a cheque for $61,000 to the Children’s Charity.
“45 years ago, Buy-Low’s founders made a commitment to give back to the communities they serve. Today, we value that promise more than ever,” says Bregg. “Variety has generously given us the opportunity to serve our mission through the excellent work that they do.”
Variety raises funds to help children with special needs and their families, and last year provided direct assistance to more than 1,300 families across British Columbia.
“For over 25 years, Buy-Low has been there for us,” says Barbie Hislop, Variety’s Executive Director. “They host many fundraisers for Variety, and the Golf Classic is the signature event. Buy-Low’s longtime commitment to giving back speaks volumes about the integrity of this incredible organization.”
For both Variety and Buy-Low, supporting families is key.
“Variety is more than our partner in this mission,” agrees Bregg. “They are our friends and our family, and this golf tournament is what we do together as a family.”
