Canada Summer Jobs funding benefits 21 students in Ladysmith

Nanaimo-Ladysmith is receiving $641,573 in Canada Summer Jobs funding in 2017-2018, up more than $77,000 from last year.

Nanaimo-Ladysmith is receiving $641,573 in Canada Summer Jobs funding in 2017-2018, up more than $77,000 from last year.

The federal funding will support 190 local jobs for post-secondary students between the ages of 15 and 30, including 21 right here in town as well as Stz’uminus First Nation.

“I’m glad to see this vital funding flowing into our community to create meaningful job opportunities for our young people,” said Sheila Malcolmson, Member of Parliament for Nanaimo—Ladysmith. “It’s a real win-win, because the money also strengthens our local economy by helping small businesses, not-for-profits and public-sector employers grow their workforce.”

Local students will be employed at the following governments and organizations.

– Ladysmith Chamber of Commerce was approved for one job

– Town of Ladysmith was approved for five

-Ladysmith Resources Association was approved for one

-Stz’uminus First Nation was approved for nine total, through two different applications

-Farmship Growers Co-op was approved for three

-Ladysmith & District Historical approved for two

Canada Summer Jobs 2017/2018 is funding a total of 62,651 employment hours at nearly 90 organizations in Nanaimo—Ladysmith, including the Nanaimo Aboriginal Centre, Boys and Girls Clubs of Central Vancouver Island, and Growing Opportunities Farm Community Co-op.

“The broad range of local funding recipients really speaks to the diversity of our community,” added Malcolmson. “I’m so proud of the important work these groups are doing to enhance cultural appreciation, support healthy development and boost food sustainability in our region.”
