Canadian Forest Products Ltd. (Canfor) is encouraging Clearwater high school students interested in a career in forestry to apply for and take advantage of the company’s scholarship and bursary program.
Canfor is offering two different scholarships (combined value of $5,500) available for students interested in studying forestry and is also sponsoring dry grad celebrations for all graduating students from Clearwater Secondary School.
“We thank Canfor for their contributions to our students including an annual university scholarship for a graduating senior, the sponsorship of our school’s dry grad celebration, mill tours, and a recent chip donation for our school garden” says Clearwater Secondary School principal Darren Coates. “As the largest employer in the district, and the professional home to so many Clearwater Secondary School alumni, we have always had a close relationship with Canfor and appreciate their continued investment in our community’s next generation.”
“Canfor believes strongly in supporting the communities where we operate and that our future is brightest when we invest in our youth,” says Steve Planeta, plant manager, Canfor Vavenby. “With these scholarships and donations, we are re-affirming our support for the community and recognizing its importance to our operations.”
Canfor is providing a scholarship in the amount of $500 to students entering degree or trades foundation programs related to forestry. Students applying to receive a scholarship must identify their intent to pursue a career in the forest products industry. Students are asked to check with their school before the end of the academic year if they’d like to apply and can get more information by going to: http://clearsec.sd73.bc.ca/.
In addition, Canfor is inviting students in the upper North Thompson Valley to apply for the Bentley-Prentice Scholarship, a scholarship that was established in 2013 to celebrate Canfor’s 75th anniversary. The award recognizes academic excellence among children of current Canfor employees who plan to pursue a career in forestry or a relevant trade.
There are six awards available each year. Students receiving these awards will receive a payment of up to $5,000 to cover the cost of tuition/books.
The deadline for this scholarship is July 1.
Students who are interested in applying for the Bentley-Prentice scholarship must email communications@canfor.com.
In addition to the two scholarships, Canfor will also be sponsoring Clearwater Secondary School’s dry grad, an event that allows students to celebrate their graduation, after prom, in a safe and drug and alcohol-free environment.
