The College of the Rockies is teaming up with Golden Secondary School for their first ever Career Fair Night.
“It’s unique for us, it’s the first time we’ve ever done it, and we’re very excited about it, both the college and the high school,” said Karen Cathcart, manager of the Golden campus of College of the Rockies.
“I think all students should really be considering this as an opportunity to really talk to employers in the community, and ask them questions about how they started their careers in the trades or in the health field, or wherever.”
The college has sent out more than 70 invitations to business owners and professionals in the community that represent a specific industry, and they have already received quite a few responses.
“We’re hoping it is going to be well attended. We’re preparing for about 200 people, and we will be serving snacks and refreshments,” said Cathcart.
There will be a few formal presentations where the college and the high school will discuss the importance of education and moving from high school to post secondary, as well as the opportunities here in Golden.
“They’ll have the chance to learn about the healthcare program, the intro to trades program, the job readiness program, the dual -credit opportunities for different programs, and we’re probably going to run the hair dressing program as well,” said Cathcart.
“We want to make sure we’re providing the same opportunities for local kids and local students as they would in larger centres.”
It is also a good opportunity for business owners in Golden to tell their story, about how they ended up where they are.
“I think that we have a very strong number of entrepreneurs, and this is an opportunity for them to share their secrets, or their wisdom with these young people who want to move forward with their careers,” said Cathcart.
The Career Fair Night is on Thursday Jan. 12 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Golden Secondary School. For more information or to register, contact the Golden Campus at 344-5901, or email golden@cotr.bc.ca.
