Kelly O’Bryan’s Neighbourhood Restaurants, owned and operated by Reg Henry are expanding—again! They are opening a new restaurant in Kitsilano in Vancouver on 7th and Burrard in January 2015. The restaurant will have 200 seats and a patio. Chris Pooli from Kamloops will be the manager. This is the eighth Kelly O’s in B.C. Other locations are Kelowna, West Kelowna, Kamloops (2), Prince George, Nanaimo and Vernon.
Teriyaki Experience has purchased the Chopped Leaf restaurant chain based in Kelowna. The chain now has 18 franchised locations in Western Canada originally started by Blair Stevens. Teriyaki Experience is a Japanese restaurant chain that has 135 locations worldwide. The brands will be run separately. Nick Veloce of Innovative Food Brands will oversee both chains. Stevens will remain with Chopped Leaf as president. The plan is to open more Chopped Leaf outlets.

The public is invited to visit the Okanagan Military Museum at 1424 Ellis St. on November 11 after the Remembrance Day Ceremonies at the Cenotaph, until 4 p.m. Come and share your memories and see their various displays including a time line of World War One. Rebecca Robinson of Life Story Film will be at the Military Museum on the 11th to interview and film veteran’s stories and those that remember them for a digital film donation. The final film will be shown at the Okanagan Regional Library Show and Tell on November 29. Share your stories to commemorate our heroes.
Another special event is being held at the Okanagan Military Museum on November 6 at 2 p.m., presented by the Military Museum Society and Kelowna Museums. A set of medals donated by Senator Ross Fitzpatrick and his family will be accepted by the Military Museum. These medals including the Military Cross were awarded to senator Fitzpatrick’s uncle for his heroic efforts overseas in the First World War. A dedication ceremony will be conducted to celebrate this fine addition to the Military Museum collection. The Fitzpatrick family will also announce a donation to the Military Museum.

Author and former teacher Joanne Swain has published the Life Cycle of the Kokanee Salmon, which she has written for grade levels 2, 3, and 4. She wrote the book because while she was teaching there were very few books written at this level for students to use for research skills that are found in the curriculum. Joanne took all the pictures that are in the book of the spawning salmon which give the children a visual image of what happens as well as the written story. The story is about the kokanee salmon’s life cycle from being laid as an egg in a freshwater stream to returning to that same stream four years later as an adult spawner. For the third consecutive year, Bai Tong Restaurant in downtown Kelowna will host a major fund raising event for Project Literacy Kelowna. In 2004 Jamjit and Kitti Karunyasopon arrived from Thailand with limited English skills and began working with Elaine Johnston and a tutor to learn English. In 2007 they became proud Canadian citizens. They have always been grateful for the help they received from Project Literacy and came up with the fundraiser. Vouchers worth $10 and $20 will be sold to the public and redeemed at Bai Tong with 100 per cent of the profits going to Project Literacy. The event will run from November 17 until December 11.Vouchers are available at the Project Literacy office at 1635 Bernard Ave. and at Bai Tong at 275 Bernard Ave. They can be used for lunch or dinner Monday to Thursday. In an effort to improve the flow of donations that staff and volunteers are able to process, the Kelowna Women’s Shelter Thrift Store at #6-368 Industrial Way, is setting specific days and times it will now accept donations from the public. Anyone who wants to drop off new or gently-used items that are in good condition is asked to do so between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays only. The store accepts men’s, women’s’ and children’s clothing, women’s footwear, linens, dishes/glasses, plastic items, cookware, electrical toys and some furniture items. They are unable to accept mattresses and box springs, large appliances, old electronics, TVs, microwaves, sewing and craft times, men’s shoes, records, books, magazines and any baby items such as cribs, mattresses, highchairs, swings, car sets and strollers.

The Kettle Valley Halloween Maze hosted by the Okanagan Mission Rotarians was a fantastic success on Halloween night. More than 650 people went through “The House of Clowns” and came out again, mostly screaming. Led by Okanagan Mission Rotary president Laurie Gaymer, other Rotarians involved were Steve Wolfenden, Ross Grimmer and Lockie Bracken. Volunteers were Dan Robinson, Claire Robinson, Freddie Banfield, Tyson Cuylle, Stacey Lukin and Lynsey Stillborn. Mario’s Towing (Nic Moretto) had their truck out for lighting and Paul Lysak donated the generator. Evil Clown Master was Alan Robinson and kudos to all the evil clowns who were unbelievable. Designer and project manager was Steeplejack “Key Grip” with stage manager and Evil Clown Tom Gaymer. A great event and effort from Soccer United, Kelowna City Parks and Rotary.
