Watch for a series of stamps being brought out by Canada Post honouring four well-known Canadians today. Tommy Hunter, Shania Twain, Hank Snow and k.d. lang are being honoured on the postage stamps. Some interesting trivia regarding Tommy Hunter. Fifty years ago this month, Kelowna Mayor Walter Gray and Bob Hall (Walter Gray’s former business partner, now deceased) toured Western Canada with Hunter, a long-time friend, for three weeks in 1964, including the Calgary Stampede with the famous and popular Country Hoedown Show. Hunter was one of the stars of the top rated Friday night CBC-TV show, along with Gordie Tapp, Cousin Clem, Tommy Common, Al Cherny, Maurice Bollier, Pat Hervey and the Hames sisters. The TV show ran from 1956 to 1965. It was replaced by the Tommy Hunter Show in 1966. Who would have known?

Big White has been voted the best International Family Ski Resort by Out and About with Kids Magazine of Australia. Each year, the magazine polls their readers to vote for their favourite ski hills in various categories for the Best of Family Travel Awards over a six month period from October 2013 to April, 2014. Big White beat out mountains such as Vail, Aspen, Niseko, Banff and Japan.
National team newcomer Kierra Smith (our neighbour) has made a big splash in her senior international debut this past weekend in Glasgow, Scotland, at the Commonwealth Games. She was fastest in the 200-m breast heats earning lane 4 in the final with a personal best of 2:25.19 and the fastest Canadian time for a female swimmer this year. Smith also raced the semi-finals ranking second in the 100m breaststroke with a time of 1:08.49 qualifying for finals. In finals she placed seventh overall. Her next major event is Pan Pac at Brisbane, Australia, in August.
On Wednesday July 23, the Kelowna and District SHARE Society unveiled a memorial plaque honouring the late Cathie Harnett for her 30 years of contribution and support to the society. Harnett served on the board, oversaw the administration and office at the society depot and for years assisted many low income locals with their annual income tax filings. She led many of the society’s initiatives and often, almost single handedly, met and overcame the many challenges the society has faced. Harnett passed away on Feb. 12, 2014 and is sorely missed by everyone involved in the Kelowna and District SHARE Society.

B.C. and Canada’s first U-Pick Gourmet Garlic Farm has opened on Granville Road, off Longhill. Farmer Bill Campbell has 50,000 garlic bulbs planted with some already sold to high end retail grocery stores in Vancouver, some to local stores and some being saved for the Kelowna Farmers’ and Crafters’ Market. The rest are for the local and visitors who love the savings they get on a U-Pick. The garlic at U-Pick is at least half the price of garlic he sells at the market. Garlic available is Persian Star, Russian Red, German Red, Spanish Roja and Yugoslavian garlic still available. Each Wednesday at noon on Aug. 6, 13, 20 and 27, the Cathedral Church of St. Michael and All Angels, 608 Sutherland Ave., will be conducting heritage tours of its 100-year-old Anglican Church building. Explore the beautiful old grey stone landmark made of local materials, one of the few Craftsman church buildings in B.C. Hear the stories and history associated with the church’s interior and experience its wonderful acoustics when you hear the organ played. After the tour (30-40 minutes), relax, smell the roses and walk the labyrinth in the beautifully landscaped grounds. The tour is free to the public.
The 32nd annual Pushor Mitchell Apple Triathlon is Aug. 15 to 17, starting and ending in downtown Kelowna. Organizers are asking for volunteers for positions of bike and run course marshals, set-up and take-down, security, body-marking, finish line duties and assistance to paratriathletes. On Saturday, Nov. 29, the Living Positive Resource Centre will host the World AIDS Day Kelowna Art Gala at the Laurel Packinghouse. The evening will feature live paintings by local artists as well as the attendance of local celebrities whose original pieces of art will be presented and auctioned. Toby Tannas, Ian MacKinnon and yours truly will present the submitted artworks for auction, all of which were commissioned specially for World AIDS Day. From Oct. 7 to 12, a three-day dog trainer’s workshop and three day trainer shadowing/adventure safari will take place in our city. These seminars feature three days of presentations for trainers and an optional additional three days available to join in for more activities, exploration and fun. Called “Walk Into Excellence—Linking Trainers with Trainers, Dog Trainers Workshop and Shadow Program,” it’s presented by Dogzies Pet Services, owned and operated by Wayne Dorman. Feature presentations are by Ted Efthymiadis of Halifax, NS, Wayne Dorman and Sarah Fulcher, of Trail. This will be a unique opportunity to learn from three different trainers, three different styles and really diverse subject matters.
