There’s something new in Coombs that you doughnut want to miss.

The Coombs Old Country Market has just opened a new doughnut shop that is located just a couple of steps away from the main entrance of the store.

This popular rounded sweet treat has piqued the interest of the many faithful costumers that frequent the market as well as visitors. General manager Arthur Urie said they haven’t even started working on their promotions yet but it’s becoming popular already despite opening only in the first week of June.

“The response has been quite a surprise,” said Urie. “People see it and say, ‘Doughnuts!’ We have received a lot of good response. It’s been very positive and people have been very excited.”

The market already has bakery that produces an array of wonderful and tasty pastries and bread that are baked fresh everyday. The doughnut shop, Urie said, is an added attraction that will complement their other traditional selection of goodies.

“We’ve wanted to offer doughnuts for many, many years because our whole idea here at the market has always been a kind of treat yourself atmosphere,” said Urie. “What better treat than a doughnut. A good doughnut. A great doughnut.”

The doughnuts are made fresh everyday using the best ingredients they can find, said Urie.

“The toppings will have a little more creativity, be a little more personable, and little more local,” said Urie. “We are using some vanilla that we import ourselves. We are using local honey from apiaries in the area to make our buzz off doughnuts. We put a lot of care, a lot of attention and details because we want to be the best.”

The shop is open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. It offers 22 varieties of doughnuts.

“We try to change it up a bit from time to time,” said Urie. “We will be trying new things and experimenting with flavours every chance we can.”

Since opening, Urie said, customers are loving the Coombs Cutoff, which is a yeast raised doughnut, chocolate-dipped and filled with bavarian cream. Another popular treat is the French Creek Fog Cutter, which is a chocolate-dipped, lemon-filled yeast doughnut. Other unusually named treats now being sold include Auntie Val’s Old Fashioned Sour Cream Doughnut; The Rowbotham Ridge, a maple-dipped cookie crumble cake doughnut; Good Old Standby, a strawberry jam-filled, chocolate-dipped and peanut butter-drizzled yeast doughnut; Billy Gruff Bomber, a maple-dipped bacon crumble cake doughnut; The Grafton Avenue, a chocolate-dipped cake doughnut with chopped peanuts; and many other traditional doughnuts like apple fritter.

If you haven’t been down to the Coombs Market lately, Urie said, you now have a new reason to do so.

“Come and treat yourself to a nice, tasty and fresh doughnut,” said Urie.
