Tasty, fresh local apple juice, straight from the apple to the glass.

James Hanna reports that Salmon Arm’s Hanna & Hanna Orchards Farm Market is one of the first in Canada to use a mobile juice plant.

Frank Deiter from Okanagan Spirits Distillery in Vernon, which makes speciality spirits from B.C. fruit, has been coming to Hanna’s recently with his Mobile Juice Factory, creating fresh juice from their apples.

“It takes and washes them, crushes them up, presses the juice out, then goes through a hot water pasteurization process – flash pasteurization heats them for 15 seconds, then automatically fills a bag which is capped and put in a box like the wine bags,” says Hanna.

The boxes will last a year and, after the seal on the bag has been opened, three months – all without refrigeration.

“It’s great stuff. The juice is a really nice colour, full bodied,” Hanna says, noting that 16 pounds of apples create a five-litre bag. “It’s a terrific product.”

The bags are recyclable.
