About 20 representatives of the local commercial community met March 21 at the Castlegar campus of Selkirk College for the latest Chamber of Commerce “Business After Business” mixers.
College president Angus Graeme had been scheduled to speak to the group but was called away on another matter. Graeme was filled in for by director of human resources and community relations Gary Leier.
“What colleges do in their communities is very different than what they did 50 years ago,” said Leier who spoke for about 10 minutes. “We’re going to spend the next five years re-wrapping this college to reflect today’s community and today’s learners. To do that we’ve identified initiatives… we’re going to increase enrollment, we’re going to build on the strengths and develop innovative programs. We’re going to modernize our infrastructure, we’re going to expand our impact on community development, and continue to be an employer of choice in the valley.”
