One of the most recognizable heritage buildings in downtown Cloverdale has undergone a bit of a facelift.

The exterior of the Dale Building across from Hawthorne Square on 176 Street is being repainted.

Home to Destination Cloverdale – headquarters of the Cloverdale BIA and the Cloverdale Chamber of Commerce – the Dale building represents the front door to the historic town centre, functioning as a visitor info centre and local business hub.

The building is also home to one of the few remaining antique stores, Cloverdale Antiques, along with Cloverdale Computer Den, plus a law office.

Every December, a gigantic metal tree festooned with strings of Christmas lights appears on top of the Dale Building, which has a distinctive, false front roof line, just in time for the Santa Parade of Lights, courtesy of the Cloverdale Masonic Lodge.

A small crew from South Surrey company Norwegian Wood repainted the wooden exterior of the two-storey building along with making minor repairs.

It’s been repainted in the same creamy-white colour, with Forest Green replacing the former trim, which looked brown but was actually red.

“It’s been a labour of love,” said Ben Langford of Norwegian Wood, a company that specializes in painting, renovations, restoration and general maintenance work. The company has done a number of other jobs for the building’s owner, the City of Surrey.

“Everyone seems to be taking a lot of pride in it,” Langford beamed, climbing down from the second storey ladder to pose for a photo. “It’s looking fresh and new. It’s going to look quite posh.”

Three separate awnings were removed during painting and will be replaced once the paint’s dry.
