Funds allocated for mine scrutiny

Intervenors to get federal funds

In order to support public participation in the federal review process of the proposed Raven Underground Coal Mine, the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency has allocated $84,160.30 to eight applicants, including CoalWatch Comox Valley.

CoalWatch is expected to get around $20,500 to help bring in expert laypeople to look at review documents, pay for meetings, travel expenses and other costs. Chairperson of CoalWatch John Snyder said the group had asked for more funding in their application, but will likely only receive the $20,500.

Other funding recipients include Mr. Michael D. Fisher, the Sierra Club of BC Foundation (on behalf of Sierra Club Comox Valley), the BC Shellfish Growers Association, Mr. Robert Christie, Ms. Carolyn Shaffer, Alberni Environmental Coalition, and Mr. Jack Cann.
