Health concerns close doors on Surrey restaurants

Fraser Health releases its health inspections list for 2014.

Health concerns close doors on Surrey restaurants

Health code violations led to the closures of 34 restaurants in Surrey last year.

The closure orders were issued by Fraser Health, and while most were short-term in the range of one to three days, two restaurants remain shut down.

Bukjang Korean Restaurant in Guildford closed its doors on March 25, 2014 for “failure to ensure food is obtained by approved sources,” while the Biryani Garden Restaurant has been shut down since Aug. 20, 2014 for “food premises not maintained in a sanitary condition.

Most restaurants on the list were assessed for anywhere from one to three violations, but four were higher, including the White Spot Restaurant in Guildford, which was assessed nine violations on Sept. 2, 2014. Sanitary conditions and concerns over food storage resulted in a one-day shutdown.

Mughal Gardens Banquet Hall had six violations including food not protected from contamination, premises not free of pests and not maintained in sanitary condition prompting a three-day closure.

Non Stop Pizza in Newton received five violations, including premises not free of pests and not maintained in sanitary condition.

Vancouver Veggi Pizza #2 was also cited for five violations, including failing to maintain sanitary conditions.

Four Surrey businesses were fined for Health Code violations, but were not required to shut down. Three were issued one fine each, while Lovely Sweets and Restaurant in Newton was fined a total of $805 on March 13, 2014 for three violations, including failing to ensure adequate hand washing by employees and failing to protect food from contamination.
