Islands Agriculture Show comes to Saanich Fairgrounds

This year's theme is Prospering in a Time of Uncertainty

The 2019 Islands Agriculture Show fills the Saanich Fairgrounds, on Feb. 1 and 2.

With the intriguing theme of Prospering in a Time of Uncertainty, the trade show will offer 60 stalls, conference sessions and a free Young Farmers Day.

The event, now in its eighth year, describes itself as serving ‘the farm and food community on Vancouver Island, the Coast and Gulf Islands.’

Fourteen conference sessions spread over two days are scheduled, with topics including leasing land, financing, sustainability and biological pest control.

This year’s keynote speaker is Leona Watson, an award-winning Olds College student, who will be giving a talk entitled ‘Movers and Shakers: How Young Farmers Persist in an Ever Challenging Environment’.

As well as exhibiting tools, feeds and seeds, the show will also show off local produce.

Visitors at the Welcome Reception are invited to try some of these local foods, wine and craft beers.

Young Farmers Day will take place on the first day of the show and gives children the chance to see the shiny machinery and learn about farm safety.

In the past, the highlight for many kids has been the animals; as horses, chickens and emus have been showcased.

With animals again due to feature, the organizers predict it will be a fun-filled, informative show.

Tickets to the trade show, Feb. 1 and 2, are $5; conference sessions are $18 each or three for $45.
