Campbell Riverites looking to buy a ‘green’ car can get a sweet deal thanks to a new incentive.
Consumers will receive up to $5,000 off the pre-tax price when they buy or lease a qualifying new battery electric, fuel cell, plug in hybrid or compressed natural gas vehicle. The Clean Energy Point of Sale Incentive Program is an initiative from the BC Ministry of Environment and LiveSmart BC, in partnership with the New Car Dealers Association of BC. Barrie Brown Nissan, Steve Marshall Motors, Strathcona Toyota and Tyee Chevrolet Buick GMC are participating dealers in Campbell River.
“It’s great, glad to see that the government’s going to put some weight behind going green,” said general manager of Steve Marshall Motors Karl Ebdrup.
Steve Marshall offers the Ford Focus Electric, which qualifies for $5000 off the price.
Barrie Brown, owner of Barrie Brown Nissan, said the Nissan Leaf qualifies for $5,000 off and the Altima Hybrid which has been popular in the local market qualifies too. The Altima’s “been proven to be more useful to people who travel up and down the Island,” said Brown. “That’s more suited to the roads we have and the long distance in between.”
The Chevrolet Volt, available at Tyee Chevrolet Buick GMC, qualifies for $5000 off, and the Toyota Plug in Prius, available at Strathcona Toyota, qualifies for $2500 off.

“It’s great,” said Strathcona Toyota’s sales manager Brant Peniuk. “Every little bit of help you get is good for the consumer.”
