Mountain Equipment Co-op is setting up shop in Langley for the next five years.
“In retail, you are always looking for good locations for new stores,” said Tim Southam, a public affairs manager for the Canadian outdoor retailer.
We have planned for a new store south of the Fraser for about 18 months now.
“We have thousands of members in the Fraser Valley in various municipalities.”
Members purchase a $5 lifetime individual membership to join MEC, which in effect makes them a part owner.
There are 3.9 million MEC members, including 850,00 in B.C.
Sales — both in store and online — exceeded more than $300 million.
The store specializes in clothing, gear and services for active lifestyles.
The new location — which will be the third in the Lower Mainland, fourth in B.C. and 17th in Canada — is expected to open its doors in late June.
It will be located in the Willowbrook Park Shopping Centre in a 16,000 square foot store. It will be on 200 Street, just off the Langley Bypass.
“Langley has a good central location,” Southam said, adding that it has been successful location for other retail outlets.
The property came to MEC’s attention last summer through Bentall Kennedy, a real estate investment advisory which also specializes in property management.
The lease was finalized in September and it can twice be extended for additional five-year periods.
The store is expected to employ about 25 people, including five senior staff.
