A local company is doing something special to recognize and honour Canadian veterans for their courage and self-sacrifice.
On Thursday, Nov. 10, the Mr. Lube here in town – that’s in the 20100 block of Fraser Highway – is joining others across the country in showing their appreciation to those who have, or are serving with the Canadian Armed Forces.
Vets and current military individuals are invited to visited the local shop to receive a free, warranty-approved oil change, explained store manager Ryan Amendt.
In the inaugural run of the program in Langley last year, store manager Ryan Amendt and his seven-member team provided 32 free oil changes.
This year, he expects – as word spreads – that number will climb.
“It’s a really nice gesture,” he said, noting that franchise owner Greg Mattock chooses to cover 100 per cent of all oil changes, while some outlets are only offering 100 per cent on the basic oil changes and 50 per cent on specialty oil changes.
“They all left happy,” Amendt said of last year’s recipients.
“It’s a great thing,” he added, noting that in his view not enough is done by companies to recognize and express thanks to veterans for their contributions.
This gesture translates to a big savings for some of the recipients – many on fixed incomes, Amendt said. He noted that a basic oil change cost about $70 and can go up to close to $150, depending on specialty needs, ie. the vehicle is diesel powered or uses synthetic oil.
“The women and men who choose to serve Canada deserve our respect. They have earned it through years of service to the ideals and values that make up Canadian society,” said David Ticknor, another Lower Mainland Mr. Lube franchise owner.
“It’s the least we can do to show our appreciation and thank some of the most honourable and deserving individuals in the province,” Ticknor said.

The Langley shop is open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 10, and while they provide 45 to 50 oil changes in a regular day, Amendt expects to do many more next Thursday.
