Aldergrove’s newest family medical practice truly is keeping it in the family.
The Aldergrove Medical Centre opened this past week with four general practice doctors on staff, and they are all related to each other.
Jasbal Gill and his wife Luvdeep Malhi, along with Jasbal’s sisters Manreet and Amanpreet, are the four doctors who will be working at the shiny new facility. All four are also hospital doctors, working at the Abbotsford Regional Hospital.
Their father, Dr. Sukhdev Gill, who has worked as a GP in Aldergrove for the past 26 years, is helping his children with the new medical centre but will retain his office at the Aldergrove Safeway mall.
It has been a major undertaking in purchasing and renovating the centre’s building, a former church located at 3113 – 272 Street between Home Hardware and the Salvation Army thrift store. The two buildings were gutted and new electrical, plumbing, insulation and drywall were installed over the past year.
“We bought the building in February 2014 and just this week received our final inspection and occupant permit from the Township,” said Sukhdev.
“We are still waiting for permits to install a more modern facade as well as to enlarge the smaller building on the south side for a physiotherapy office.”
The main building has a reception desk and rooms for up to four doctors to see patients at one time, as well as a room for smaller operations such as performing stitches.
One side of the main building will be occupied by an independent pharmacy, operated by pharmacists Shawn Sandhu and Gurjit Johal.
A wing of the main building on the north side is currently being remodeled for future use by an optometrist, and the Gills also hope to bring a podiatrist to the centre in the future.
“It will also be a walk-in clinic but our main goal is family practice,” said Jasbal.
Jasbal attended medical school in Ireland and did his residency and locums at the University of Saskatchewan, before beginning his practice in Abbotsford two years ago. He also worked in his father’s Aldergrove office and is looking forward to building his family practice at the new centre.
His wife, Luvdeep Malhi, and his two younger sisters, Manreet and Amanpreet, will join him at the centre as family doctors.
Luvdeep attended medical school at UBC and completed her residency at VGH.
Manreet attended medical school in Ireland and completed her residency at Dalhousie, Nova Scotia.
Amanpreet attended medical school in Birmingham, England, and completed her residency at Saskatoon.
