New hotel coming to Revelstoke

City Council approved the development permit for the construction of a hotel next to the Ramada Hotel on the Trans Canada Highway.

However, they requested that wood embellishments such as the porte-cochère and a trellis be added, if possible.

City planner, Daniel Sturgeon presented the proposal to city council at their Sept. 25 meeting.

“This is going to be a first for Revelstoke,” Sturgeon said. “It is modular construction but it is using concrete panels that are pre-cast off site and shipped to the site and assembled.”

The Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott will be 6-storeys and 87 units with a buffet-style guest dining room with seating for 66 people, a fitness area, lounge, lobby, outdoor hot tub and outdoor patio.

The property is 1.5 hectares and the building will be over 4,500 sq. metres. There will be 116 parking stalls, 80 for the hotel and the rest for the second building that could be developed on the site for commercial use.

Sturgeon said there are not plans yet for the commercial building and it will be dealt with in a separate development permit.

To address concerns about the view of the hotel from Victoria Rd. Sturgeon said there will be extensive landscaping on the site including a perimeter of low shrubs as well as trees along the back of the hotel. They also plan on landscaping the embankment behind the hotel with grass and wild flowers.

“For so many years we have had a highways maintenance yard up there or we have had nothing up there and I think at the detriment to the community as far as having a warm, welcoming, inviting feeling to the entrance to the community,” said Mayor Mark McKee.
