The Oriental Palace in Invermere, located at 925 7th Avenue, has long brought delectable Chinese and Asian-style cuisine to valley residents.

Joyce Xu and Ming Huang, new operator and chef at the restaurant, hope to continue this tradition while adding their own spin to the menu.

“More ‘new’ is coming,” said Huang. “Every day something changes, whether it’s the buffet or the menu.”

Huang has worked as a chef for over 20 years, learning and honing his skills in China, Toronto, and Calgary. In Toronto, Huang worked at a large Asian-style restaurant, and in Calgary he and Xu managed their own.

This is the couple’s first time in Invermere, and they are enjoying the summer crowd and location.

The restaurant interior and exterior design are things that Huang and Xu are not planning on changing any time soon, though, as they are already pleased with the look and seating capacity.

“I like it,” said Huang of the town and the restaurant. “We’re expecting more customers as the summer picks up.”

While Xu helps in the kitchen on occasion, her main job is management, leaving Huang with the charge of creating and refining recipes for the restaurant.

Huang hopes to introduce diners to different tastes and even non-Asian flavours.

Sushi, and other Japanese cuisine, as well as Thai dishes and new dessert items are just a few different menu items Huang hopes to prepare and introduce.

Huang says he uses a “fusion” method of cooking, where one dish may contain inspiration and flavours from multiple countries. Authentic Asian flavours and an emphasis on of fresh products continually rotating during buffet hours are also important to Huang and Xu for their customers’ experience.

The lunch buffet is now offered Monday to Friday. Take-out is still available as well.
