New Quesnel gym’s grand opening showcases aerial arts, powerlifting and street sports

TnT Nitro Fitness is offering fitness practices that are new to Quesnel

Quesnel’s newest gym, TnT Nitro Fitness, had its grand opening event over the weekend, with a ribbon cutting, pole fitness and powerlifting demonstrations, as well as aerial hoop and acrobatics demonstrations and draws galore.

Blair and Deanna Sundby bought the Reid Street gym, which was previously named Gold City Fitness, in April this year, but they’ve been busy renovating the site to get it ready for its big opening.

“We did a lot of work, a lot of painting and moving of entire walls, and putting in a new street sport room and new equipment. We wanted to show off the changes and the new look,” says Deanna.

The space has been completely transformed, and the new owners are focusing on a number of new-to-Quesnel fitness practices, plus all the usual things you’ll find in a gym like cardio and weight equipment, and personal trainers to help clients on their fitness journeys, plus a ladies-only workout area with all kinds of equipment.

Deanna says the grand opening event was held in the hopes of attracting new members, but also with the intention of showing current members all the new things on offer.

One highlight of the new space is the street sports room.

“It’s something that’s not in town but is very popular in Europe and getting popular in the States,” says Deanna.

“It’s a type of calisthenics; it has a whole bunch of bars, a gymnastics type flooring. It’s great for doing things like handstands, there’s a rope to climb, bars for flipping over, chin ups, levers, planches… it’s body-weight training.”

Deanna says she and her daughter, who also works at TnT Nitro, practise street sports regularly, and can show newcomers how it works.

Also new are classes in pole fitness and a TeenyBopper Night on Sundays, for students Grade 10 and up. At the grand opening, Deanna says two local powerlifting champs put on displays to show guests and members the possibilities of the sport. Shalynn McCauley and Anthony Faggiani both set national World Association of Benchers and Deadlifters powerlifting records earlier this year, and train at TnT Nitro.

The gym is accessible 24 hours a day to accommodate a variety of schedules.
