Newton’s former bingo hall to open as Planet Fitness

Late-February opening planned at King George Blvd. building

The building that once housed Newton’s bingo hall will be home to Surrey’s second Planet Fitness gym, in the strip mall at 7093 King George Blvd.

The new location will officially open its doors at the end of February, according to a release from the company on Thursday.

“We are looking forward to extending our high quality, affordable and judgement-free fitness offering more widely in the Surrey community,” franchisee Chris Klebba stated. “The warm welcome we have received in our first Surrey location so far and more specifically in Western Canada, makes us confident that this new location will continue to address an unmet need in this community.”

The former bingo hall, known as Newton Community Gaming Centre, closed for good last April.

Metro Vancouver’s first Planet Fitness location opened at 10624 at King George Blvd. last January, with B.C. Lions player Solomon Elimimian and Danni Allen, from TV’s The Biggest Loser, in attendance.

The gym in Newton is 22,000 square feet in size, and will be open and staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

“Member appreciation” benefits include free pizza on the first Monday of every month, and free bagels on the second Tuesday of every month, while supplies last.

Members of the new Planet Fitness location in Newton will have full access to both locations in Surrey, the company says.

Planet Fitness was founded 25 years ago in Dover, New Hampshire. Gym features include a “Judgement Free Zone,” where members can experience “a hassle-free, non-intimidating environment,” and a so-called “Lunk Alarm,” a purple-and-yellow siren on the wall “used to gently remind people that grunting, dropping weights or judging others is not permitted.”
