Oak Bay News celebrates women in business with laughter

Guests also heard from Victoria Women's Transition House Society

The newest addition to the Oak Bay News’ Women in Business celebration earned the heartiest laughs last week.

Family law mediator and arbitrator Trudi Brown was awarded the inaugural Business Leader of the Year Award while Hazel Braithwaite, Director of Community Campaign for United Way Greater Victoria was named Community Leader of the Year.

With quick wit, both award winners drew laughs, as both said they’ve “never met a microphone they didn’t like” and took the opportunity to offer thank-yous.

“I have a great group of people I work with, I enjoy working with them,” said Brown, noting the award was for business. “I’m not a great business person, I might be working til I’m 85.”

Braithwaite also issued a wave and hello to her daughter watching through Facebook from California.

“I’m sure that my contributions haven’t been any greater than any of yours, nevertheless I truly thank you for this acknowledgment, the award is certainly great, an unexpected honour,” she told the crowd at the fourth annual event. “Don’t ever question the value of volunteers. Noah’s Ark was built by volunteers and the Titanic was built by professionals.”

Guests also heard from Susan Howard, Development Director, Victoria Women’s Transition House Society, Jessica Cruise, Victoria Golf Club and Paul Bucci, Digital Growth Manager, Black Press also spoke during the fourth annual Women in Business event at the Victoria Golf Club on March 1.
