The editorial staff at the Peace Arch News have been recognized for a handful of awards and nominations this month, at provincial, national and North American levels.
PAN photographer Brian Giebelhaus and editor Lance Peverley won two awards apiece from the Suburban Newspapers Association of America – which honours community newspapers across Canada and the United States.
Giebelhaus won first-place for best sports photo for his soccer shot, Take Down, and also picked up first place for photojournalism for his August photos taken a local veterinary hospital for a feature called Beyond the Drop-off Point.
Peverley won first place for best column writing for the second year in a row. He also picked up a third-place award for headline writing, for his front-page headline, Slow boil over water warning, which appeared above an Aug. 25 story detailing critical reaction to the discovery of E. coli in White Rock’s water system.
Next month, Peace Arch News will be well represented when the BC/Yukon Community Newspaper Association hands out its annual Ma Murray Awards, as sports reporter Nick Greenizan has been nominated for a sports-writing award for his feature, Conquering Uphill Battle, which detailed para-nordic skier Mary Benson’s comeback from a brain injury.
Indulge Magazine, which is published eight times a year by Peace Arch News staff and editor Melissa Smalley, is one of three nominees for a special-publications award.
The Peace Arch News is also nominated for a general excellence award in its circulation category.
The Ma Murray awards will be handed out April 30 at the River Rock Casino Resort.
PAN was also awarded a blue ribbon for general excellence from the Canadian Community Newspaper Association, which announced award winners earlier this month.
