What a way to say goodbye to April: with record-breaking temperatures this has been a warmer than usual month.
May 1 kicks off the new month with the ninth annual Emergency Preparedness Fair and Display, which takes place on the upper parking lot at Westshore Parks and Recreation and the Juan de Fuca Seniors facility from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
This will be a great showcase of emergency responders and supporting organizations and will highlight safety and the four pillars of emergency management. There will be indoor and outdoor displays and plenty of activities for the kids to enjoy.
Mothers Day is May 8 and the annual Mother’s Day Paint-In and Craft Fair happens at Royal Roads University from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. This is a festival of artists and artisans, entertainers and food vendors with family friendly menus. Take a free tour of Hatley Castle, enjoy live musical entertainment and engage the kids’ creativity with crafts and fun activities. Admission is free and parking is $5 for the full day. On May 11, the Westshore Chamber of Commerce will host a joint mixer with Prestige Oceanfront Resort and the Sooke Chamber of Commerce from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. A shuttle will be available for those who don’t wish to drive, courtesy of LA Limousines, departing from Langford at 4:30 p.m. to deliver guests before rush hour on Sooke Road.

The Westshore Rebels Football Club is hosting a gala fundraiser on Friday, May 13 at Olympic View Golf Club. The event will raise funds for Rebels players in the form of scholarships, as well as player development efforts. There will be a dinner, high-profile speakers, an auction, prizes and giveaways.
Speakers include 2015 Grey Cup champion Brian Ramsay of the Edmonton Eskimos, 2015 CFL Defensive Player of the Year Adam Bighill of the B.C. Lions, CFL Hall of Famer Dave Cutler, former Rebel and B.C. Lions centre Tim O’Neill and sports reporter Farhan Lalji. O’Neill’s Rebels No. 55 jersey will be retired by the team during the event. Additional guests will be announced later. Langford Mayor Stew Young will be the auctioneer for the event.
The Rebels and the Olympic View Golf Club are also offering an opportunity to golf with one of the event’s celebrity guests on May 14. Information about the celebrity golf opportunity can be found at westshorerebels.ca.
Royal Bay secondary’s Black Wing Theatre Company presents its first musical Theatre Production: Nice Work if You Can Get It. This rollicking, fast-paced musical is sure to have you singing, dancing and doubled over laughing in your seat. The show will be April 28, 29 and May 5 and 6 at 7 p.m., plus a 2 p.m. matinee on April 30. Tickets are on sale at the Royal Bay office or at the door.
On Friday and Saturday, April 29 and 30, the City of Colwood offers its annual Spring Residential Clean Up program. For a small fee, residents can bring everything from appliances and car parts to carpet and wood waste for recycling and disposal.
