Gold Trail Recycling of 100 Mile House has added a long lineup of additional items it accepts, as well as a recycling pickup pilot program.
Owner Leslie Glen is currently speaking to local businesses to educate management and staff and encourage them to get on board with expanded recycling programs.
A new residential recycling bin pickup program for 108 Mile Ranch and 103 Mile is also being promoted by Glen, who says she needs 100 homes to sign up by Feb. 29, at a cost of $10/month, in order to offer the service.
Every two weeks, a truck with segregated bins will pick up many types of glass containers, plastics, mixed paper and bundled cardboard.
New items accepted at the depot on Sollows Crescent are constantly being updated, she notes, but among others, now includes No. 2 coloured plastics, such as shampoo and coloured laundry and dish soap bottles, that take 60-70 years to break down in a landfill.
Other newly accepted items include household batteries of any kind (including rechargeable), automotive batteries, as well as tires, magazines/catalogues, mixed paper, thermostats, milk and egg cartons and more.
Noting it’s not profitable, Glen says she takes new products as a community service and public convenience.
“Most of the new additions, there’s no money in it. The reward of it is our numbers will only grow higher for annual diversions from the landfill.”
Last year, one million kilograms of recyclables were diverted by Gold Trail’s recycling service.
Depot hours have been extended for Saturdays, and Mile 108/103 Mile residents may call 250-395-1041 (ask for Leslie or Cindy) to sign up for recycling pickup.
