Lonely or isolated seniors are the focus of an ongoing holiday event sponsored by White Rock Home Instead Senior Care.
Through Dec. 5, residents are invited to participate in the Be a Santa to a Senior program, by picking up a paper ornament from a Home Instead Christmas tree, purchasing the items listed and returning them unwrapped.
The ornaments – which list a senior’s first name and desired gifts – are available at Home Instead sites, including Shoppers Home Health Care (15182 North Bluff Rd.) and at Vancity (104-1790 152 St.).
Purchased gifts should be returned to the same location where the ornament is picked up. They will be wrapped and delivered by volunteers.
Since the program launched in 2003, 60,000 volunteers have helped distribute 1.2 million gifts to 700,000 seniors. For the past seven years, it has been supported by Senior’s Come Share Society, Peace Arch Manor, Langley Senior Resources Society and Deltassist Family and Community Services Society. Recipients are identified through local community organizations, according to organizers.
