Scarecrows downtown benefit food bank

As if the longer nights aren’t scary enough, downtown Maple Ridge businesses are putting up scarecrows outside their shops.

As if the longer nights aren’t scary enough, downtown Maple Ridge businesses are putting up scarecrows outside their shops.

The creations are intended to draw people inside, where they can make food bank donations, Oct. 1 and Nov. 2.

In return for a donation, customers can vote for what they think is their best-decorated scarecrow.

The scarecrows will be provided by Downtown Maple Ridge Business Improvement Association free of charge to any participating business.

Whatever business gets the most ballots and food donations will win a prize along with one of the customers who cast a ballot.

“This promotion is multifaceted, and intended to display the individuality of our small businesses by showcasing their creativity in a fun, festive community event,” said the business association.

The added benefit is that the Friends in Need Food Bank will get a boost in food donations as Christmas approaches.
