Surrey crime prevention wins award for helping tackle cut wire theft in Surrey

Surrey Crime Prevention Society (SCPS) has won the Canadian Criminal Justice Association Crime Prevention Award for 2013.

SCPS has been supporting the city’s approach by using some of the techniques called for in Surrey’s Crime Reduction Strategy.

SCPS assists with the education, reporting and awareness of wire theft and, along with the city’s Crime Reduction Strategy team, Surrey Fire Department and the RCMP, has now trained over 50 volunteers in wire theft prevention.  The statistics reflect how successful these dedicated individuals have been in enhancing community safety.

SCPS currently has 240 Volunteers supporting the many programs delivered to the communities in Surrey.

SCPS provides:

·  traffic safety awareness

·  community safety volunteer tours

·  community safety watch

·  anti-graffiti reporting and removal

Volunteers contributed 16,594 volunteer hours last year with the aim of enhancing community safety.

Volunteers audited 20,204 vehicles through the Locking Out Auto Crime Program.

Volunteers also measured the speed of more than 50,000 vehicles through the Speed Watch Program and were monitoring areas involving school zones, playground zones and high impact areas identified  by ICBC.

·  Community Safety Program | Newton, Fleetwood, Guildford, Downtown, Crescent Beach

·  Citizens Community Safety Watch – throughout the City of Surrey

·  Special Events Programs

·  Traffic Safety Program – Cell Watch, Traffic Control

·  Speed Watch Program

·  Community Safety Youth Leadership and Mentorship Program
